Great low fat cooking tips

Annette Sym lost 35kg and has maintained her weight for the past 9 years.

Here are some of Annette's low fat cooking tips:

1. First, avoid using butter and dripping. Use cooking spray instead.

2. Grill, BBQ or bake food, throw your deep fryer away!

3. Buy lean meat. Premium mince contains less fat.Although it may be a fraction more expensive, it's worth it!

4. Remove skin from chicken. It is more economical to buy chicken with "skin off".

5. If you do like sausages, try chicken sausages instead of beef or pork, they tend to have less fat.

6. As a great alternative to coconut cream, combine 1 cup of evaporated light milk and a dash of coconut essence.

7. Mayonnaise has a very high fat content. Always choose the low fat option. Same goes for butter and margarine.

8. Avoid oil dressing on salads.

9. Drink low fat milk. Did you know that full cream milk has almost 50 times more fat per glass than skim milk?

10.When cooking cakes and muffins, you can lower the fat content simply by using applesauce instead of oil or butter. As an added tip, add bicarbonate soda into the applesauce, it will make lighter cakes or muffins.

11.Watch out for label slogans. Don't be misled when you see the word "lite" or "93% fat free". Look for the word "DIET" which means that the product is both low in fat and sugar.

12.Always check nutritional information.
