Summer Exercise Tips
By Helen O’Connor, Personal Trainer
In summer it is easier to motivate yourself to exercise. Here are a few tips to remember for your exercise plan.
1. Drink up – keep hydrated. Your body can lose a lot of fluid while exercising in hot weather. To prepare for exercising in hot weather, drink water before, during and after you exercise. Drink water even if you don’t feel thirsty.
2. Pick the right time. Plan your outdoor physical activity in the morning or evening.Avoid the heat and humidity during the day. If you are only available to exercise during the day and it is too hot or humid outside, exercise at your local health club.
3. Protect your skin. Avoid exercising between 10:00am and 3:00pm when the sun is most powerful. Always wear sunscreen with a sun protection factor of at least 30+.
4.Dress right. Wear loose-fitting clothing and a wide brimmed hat when exercising during warm weather.Wear good athletic shoes that are comfortable and don’t blister your feet.
5.Take it slow. A body used to exercising in 10 –15 degrees needs time to adjust to hotter weather. Take it easy when the temperature first begins to heat up and then gradually increase the amount of time you exercise for.
6. Get help from the experts. If you are just beginning to exercise, a personal trainer is a good way to safely achieve your goals with tailored plans that fit into your lifestyle and current fitness levels. Check with your doctor that your exercise plan is suitable for your health condition.
7. Find an activity you enjoy. The best way to stick with an exercise plan is to have fun. Choose activities you like and before you know it, you’ll enjoy exercising.
